I've used two different bag carriers in the past. Both were pains to use, especially in winter, when the zippers and fabric were stiff. In those cases, too, the zippers were on top, difficult to reach and stuff luggage. This Rola was a relief for my budget and back.Sturdy aluminum frame in a bottom sleeve that's separate from luggage compartment (although part of a bracket ripped my inner fabric while inserting frame).Flexible soft-side design has allowed me to fit a large family tent, 6 sleeping bags, about 6 duffel/backpacks, and 3 folded air mattresses (easily stuffed from one of 3 zippered doors with weather flaps). On my 04 Durango, with crossbars, installation was simple and allowed enough room alongside for 6 camp chairs. I deducted a star b/c fabric ripped and instructions were poorly written.I love the collapsibility and provided rain fly.Although I was searching for a reasonable shell carrier, this seems like it is a better value. Smart design!

SportRack Aero 1300 Roof Box Review

SportRack Aero 1300 Roof Box
Average Reviews:

Much better than expected.I've only had this on my Toyota 4runner for a few weeks.Does not feel very heavy, nor does it affect my fuel/mileage so far.Easy to assemble. Also very easy to take on and off any standard crossbar.
The picture is actually inaccurate.Go to the officieal Sportrack website and type in ABS 1300 Ski model A26395.Or just type in the model number. You will see the actual picture is a much longer box.The typical Yakima or Thule Box that is similar sized will usually cost you about $350 to $500, you can buy the exact same one for only $200 on Amazon, under a mistaken picture.I am surprised they are selling this box at this price.I think it might be the price of the picture, which is a smaller dimension roof cargo box.The smaller box would not have fit my snowboard/skis, but the one that was shipped (model A26365) for $200 fit my gear perfect.
75" is definitely the length of the box in case you were wondering if it would be too long for your vehicle. Also, when the Sportrack box came in through UPS, i saw a "thule" symbol on the box..Could it be the same company?who knows..but the quality is exactly the same. Good lock on the box too.Oh and the model that came is one that opens on the passenger side only (for sidewalk loading). This was quite a deal!highly recommended!!

Yakima Frontloader Rooftop Bike Carrier Review

Yakima Frontloader Rooftop Bike Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this roof bike rack from a retailer, so the price on Amazon is about $20 less (each)... so you get a better deal on Amazon.I'm not a bike specialist and this is my first bike roof rack.I also had this rack installed onto the base rack onto my car by the retailer. The process took a little less than an hour.

I would have preferred a hitch rack installed on the rear of my car but I learned my car (MINI Clubman) is a bit difficult to install a hitch. You would have to take the rear bumper off and the two rear tire fenders... install the hitch and put everything back together.I wasn't in the mood to chance it since my car is new and installation of a hitch + bike rack and all its accessories would've got me in the $1,000 range. The hitch would've come in handy though. Here's why:

If you're short like me, having a bike rack on the roof of your car is a bit of a chore. It's certainly possible, but imagine yourself lifting your bike over your head and having to fit it on the rack without dropping it.No room for error on this or else it crashes on top of your car and perhaps does damage on your sunroof. In addition, you'll have to balance the bike (while you're holding from the side of the car) and strap your bike in (using one hand) while your other hand is holding onto the bike frame or pedal. So for me, it's a two-person job.

Onto the bike rack itself...

I was told it's a new model from Yakima. It's a little heavier than a single bike tray since it has two enforcements for the front bike tire. It's made out of aluminum, so it doesn't rust much with a black powder coat. The overall look is nice on my car, since I have a black top. With everything installed, including a wind deflector I purchased separately... my car looks like a pseudo-military vehicle. The wind deflector is necessary because with the bars I have (and this rack), I was told it's not aerodynamic so you hear a little whistling. The wind deflector, which I got for $60, works great.

Before you put the bike on your roof (and onto the rack), you need to pre-determine the measurements of the two enforcements that will squeeze the front tire on the rack. This is determined by the size of your front bike tire. You need to do this before you pick up the bike and place it on the rack the first time - trust me on this.

Once you've got the front fitted and the front tire is firmly in place... there is a simple strap for the rear bike tire, which is strong. So it's important that you get the right fitting in the front and force it tightly so it fits correctly with your front tire size.

All in all, it's not an exact science. It's only as good as you configure your bike into the rack. There's no "snap", "crackle", and "pop" to tell you that it's secure and everything will be OK.You need to put your bikes in tight enough so when you try to wiggle the bike in the rack, there's only a little bit of "give".

There's a bike lock on the rack so you can tie it around your bike frame - but it's only a wire lock. This won't keep your bike secure on the road... only secure it from someone trying to steal your bike when you're parked.

Last, but not least, there's also a lock, sold separately, for the rack - that attaches to your base rack... so people can't steal your rack while it's parked.

My configuration as follows:
- I already had factory installed roof rails on my car.

- I had to purchase a roof base... these are the two bars that run sideways on top of the factory roof rails. These are fastened onto the roof rails.

- I purchased the Yakima Front Loader (2) for two bikes.

- I also purchased the wind deflector separately. This is installed in the front of the rack on top of your car.

- Purchased the locks that fit the bars and racks separately.

I've had this rack for about two weeks now. It's pretty cool looking, only as secure as you want it, but takes your bikes anywhere you want to go.This rack is slightly less expensive than other Yakima racks with a similar design... but more expensive than most racks like it on the market.

One quick note on price... I had a little sticker shock when I came up with the total for the whole bike rack. With labor, it cost me a little less than $850 for two Yakima bike racks, the base racks (2 bars), and the locks for the base rack and Yakima racks, and the wind deflector.Perhaps I got hosed???Aside from that, I'm pretty happy with it.

I'll post updates as I use this rack more in the near future. So far, so good.I hope this helps you.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Roof Rack Cross Rails Review

Jeep Grand Cherokee Roof Rack Cross Rails
Average Reviews:

The product came as promised. I had a question about the product pre-purchase to Mopar that was answered promptly. I had a question post-purchase and have never seen a response. The product was easy to install, but the rails slide and my question was if there was a way to tighten them because we attached a snow board rack and want it secure. Never heard a word once I purchased. So I'd say after-the-sale service from Mopar was non-existent.

Yakima Hitch Ski Mount Review

Yakima Hitch Ski Mount
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Yakima Hitchski worked well with my DoubleDown4 bike rack mounted to my Jeep Patriot. Some reviews say the Hitchski causes handling of the vehicle to decrease, but I did not notice a difference in this smaller, 4 cylinder SUV. The skis remained secure even though the bike rack had some bounce to it. Yakima has improved the width of the ski clamps, so loading twin tips is not much of an issue. However, some styles of bindings may limit your ability to clamp down skis as shown in the picture. You may have to clamp in the skis side by side. This limits the capacity, but is not an issue for me because I don't plan on hauling 6 pairs at one time. This rack will never outsell roof mounted systems, but the ease of taking on and off the hitchski is a definite plus. I would recommend this rack to anyone who is looking for a more portable, easier to access ski rack.

Thule Fit Kit for 400XT and Rapid Aero Foot (2171) Review

Thule Fit Kit for 400XT and Rapid Aero Foot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this fit kit for a 2008 Scion xB (just saying that because it's possible that it fits other cars). Anyway, the kit works, it's strong and I have no doubts about it's ability to do its job.

However, the weather strip on the doors sticks out kind of funny. For me, it's more pronounced and awkward on the rear door than front. It may be unavoidable but it's awkward. Also, this is my first Thule rack and I'm extremely disappointed in the instructions. The Aero Foot instructions say the bars should be 28" apart, the fit kit instructions say 26". That's just silly. Mine are more like 38" apart, though I suppose that would depend on the type of load you want to carry, in my case, surfboards.

The fit kit tells you how far apart the aero feet should be (47 1/4" for the front, 47 5/8" for the rear). This just is not correct. If you do this, you end up needing a ridiculous amount of force to properly tighten the feet. Give yourself and extra 1/2-3/4 of an inch.

Another disappointment, and I add it to this review because a better design fit kit could fix this, is the angle that the aero foot sits at. It just looks silly with the plastic shell that comes with the foot. The bottom of the shell wants to be parallel to the ground, while the base of the foot has to fit the contour of the roof. Silly. A longer fit kit could allow the angle of the bottom of the aero foot to be less, making it a closer match to the bottom of the shell. It's the "aero"dynamic shell that makes the aero foot, aero.

It's worth noting that the fit kit has two different sized brackets, the smaller for the front, the larger for the rear.

Now that I have my kit on, I have no questions about the strength of it. I fully trust it but boy was it a bear to get on. In the end, you're only other option is to go with a non-Thule brand or a universal mount and drill into the roof.

Master Lock 3022DAT Yellow Bungee Cord - Pack of 2 Review

Master Lock 3022DAT Yellow Bungee Cord - Pack of 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used lots of bungee cords over the years that have varied in quality. Cheap bungee cords tend to be thin, have a single hook, and fray easily--though sometimes none of that matters. However after I purchased the Magna Hand Cart on Amazon to transport boxes in the office and luggage at the airport, I looked for a quality set of bungee cords that I could use, and discovered this product, which works perfectly.

Regardless of what you use these bungee cords for, they are first rate. They have a nice thickness, a double hook at each end for a more secure connection, and easily stretch. For the price a set costs on Amazon, they are a bargain. They are much longer than lots of other bungee cords, however, so be sure that you need this extra length; otherwise you should get something else.
